Books for Becks

by

Even before I was pregnant with Becks, I knew that I wanted reading to play a big role in my children's lives. I remember my parents reading stories to my sisters and me every night before bed growing up, and then hiding under the covers with a flashlight so I could read to myself after bedtime. Thankfully, my mom saved a lot of my favorite books for me to pass on to my children. When they found out we were pregnant, my in-laws started giving us a book every month with a sweet message written inside for the baby. They continue to do this now that he is born (I really have the best in-laws), and it's so fun to see his book collection grow.

My husband and I started reading to Becks before he was born. (almost) Every night, we would each pick out a couple of books and read to my belly before going to bed. When he was around three months old, I started reading to him regularly again, usually at bedtime and once more during the day (often outside, under the trees). From the beginning, he definitely showed a preference for certain books (really, he did!), especially those by Eric Carle. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? has been his favorite from early on. No matter how tired or fussy or restless he is, he will always sit through that book! Here are a few of our current favorite books for Becks.

Where's My Teddy is Becks' second favorite (behind "Brown Bear", of course)...he definitely loves books about bears! It's a cute story about a boy, a bear and their teddy bears. It rhymes and has big, colorful pictures. Becks likes turning the pages.

It's not currently Becks' favorite (mostly because of how long it is), but when he was too little to care one way or the other, we read The Story of Ferdinand often. I remember my grandma reading this to me as a little girl, and it's a great addition to Becks' collection (from grandma Cary & grandpa Jon!).

One of my favorite books we received when pregnant from my brother and sister-in-law was A Sick Day for Amos McGee. I read it often while pregnant, and Becks loves it now too (although sometimes we only get through the first 3-4 pages...). It's a super cute story about a zookeeper whose animal friends take care of him when he gets sick. The illustrations are just beautifully done. A must have for any library!

Heckedy Peg was one of my favorites as a child, and I was SO excited to purchase it and read it to Becks! It's definitely a bit advanced for him now (read: he does not like this as a bedtime story), but I look forward to seeing him enjoy it in the future (for now, I'll just read it to myself!).

Another great gift from grandma and grandpa...I Can Read With My Eyes Shut is a fun Dr. Seuss book. It was one of the husband's favorites when he was a little boy, which is why grandma got it for Becks. As you can tell, he enjoys it (especially when Daddy reads it to him)!
